Sewage Spills Reported to State Agency
Impact on Big Bear Lake Minimal
By Michael P. Neufeld
Monday, July 7, 2008
Big Bear Lake, CA – Two sewage spills over the Fourth of July weekend had minimal impact on Big Bear Lake but both were reported to the Governor's Office of Emergency Services and other regulatory agencies.
The first incident was reported at 9:38 a.m. on the Fourth of July by the City of Big Bear Lake and involved about 800 gallons of sewage.
The state notification read: Caller states a grease blockage in the main line resulted in the overflow of substance out of a manhole. In addition, an unknown amount of the 800 gallons released made it into Big Bear Lake. Testing will continue on the lake and also the small cove area that was impacted will be closed."
The address of the incident was in the 38000 block of Big Bear Boulevard.
Agencies on scene were Cal Trans, Big Bear Municipal Water District, City of Big Bear Lake and the Big Bear Regional Waste Water Agency.
The second spill was located in the 40000 block of Lake View Drive at 3:10 p.m. on July 5 and involved 200 gallons of sewage.
The California Office of Emergency Services (OES) was notified faulty sewer pipes caused the incident and that the spill was contained with minimal impact on Big Bear Lake.
Meanwhile, a minor spill that could have impacted the drinking water of Lake Arrowhead was reported Thursday (July 3). The incident happened at 5 p.m. the day before when Kiwi Docks dropped a portable toilet in the lake near the shoreline of Lone Pine Island. The toilet was quickly removed but not before about 5 gallons of sewage flowed into the lake. The Lake Arrowhead Community Services District sampled the water in the area.
