Original Story

Skyforest, CA — The Mountain Top Hiking Club will present a special two-mile hike on Friday (May 16) at the Heaps Peak Arboretum featuring a presentation by a member of the Rim of the World Search and Rescue team.

The easy walk starts at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10:30 a.m. talk by the Search and Rescue volunteer who will outline a procedure should a hiker get lost, how to avoid it, and what to do if it happens to you.

In 1922, fire devastated the site, leaving only blackened tree remnants. Six years later, the Lake Arrowhead Women's Club, headed by Mary Putnam Henck, organized the first planting of new trees.

Heaps Peak Arboretum is operated by the Rim of the World Interpretative Association and offers a unique arboretum and botanical garden with a diversity of native plants and generally plenty of wildflowers at this time of year.

Hikers are urged to bring water, snacks, a sack lunch and a folding chair and wear comfortable shoes although the hike only has a 50-foot elevation gain.

The Mountain Top Hiking Club invites the public to participate and no reservation is required. However, a Forest Adventure Pass or Golden Passport is required to park at the Arboretum.
