The unidentified firefighter, who was driving the engine at the time of the incident, was stabilized by paramedics and airlifted to Loma Linda while other crews battled a two-story structure fire that had fully engulfed the caretaker's cabin at the front of the YMCA camp.
Firefighters on scene told dispatchers that the building, recently featured in the movie Rainbow Tribe (2008), was not spreading but that the structure was expected to be a total loss. The movie is scheduled for release February 28.
Scanner transmissions indicated the engine, assigned to the Angelus Oaks Station #15 located at 5766 Frontage Road, struck a tree before other firefighters were able to stop the vehicle that suffered minor damage including the loss of a side mirror and several reflectors.
