Flash Flood Watch Until 9 PM Sunday
National Weather Service In San Diego
By News Staff Member
Sunday, July 20, 2008
The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for the San Bernardino County Mountains and deserts from 11 am until 9 pm today.
Increasing monsoonal moisture will bring scattered thunderstorms to the mountains and deserts today. Heavy downpours may produce flash flooding. Burn areas are most susceptible where a third of an inch of rain in 30 minutes may produce flash flooding and debris flows.
The Watch area includes Apple and Lucerne Valleys, Coachella Valley, Riverside and San Bernardino county mountains, and San Diego county deserts and mountains.
Slow moving thunderstorms with heavy downpours are expected today. The potential for flash flooding in the afternoon and evening is moderate. People traveling in the mountains and deserts may encounter very heavy rain, flash flooding, and possible debris flows in the burn areas.
A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Monitor the latest forecasts and conditions and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory
An Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory has also been issued for San Bernardino and Riverside counties until 10 a.m. today.
At 6:54 a.m., a group of thunderstorms was moving through Palm Springs and the surrounding area toward the northwest into the San Bernardino Mountains.
The rainfall is heavy enough to produce flooding in streets and urban areas around Palm Springs. Flooding is likely in small streams and washes in the surrounding steep terrain.
Thunderstorms are moving into the San Bernardino Mountains and adjacent portions of the Apple and Lucerne Valleys. These storms will be accompanied by dangerous lightning and may produce gusty winds, brief heavy downpours, and small hail.
