Red Flag Warning For the High Deserts; Wind Watch For Mountains

By News Staff Member
Friday, October 10, 2008

Red Flag Warning

A Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday (October 10) for the High Deserts due to very low relative humidity and strong west to southwest winds. The affected areas include Victor Valley, Apple Valley, Lucerne Valley, Yucca Valley, and Morongo Valley.

A strong, deep upper low over the Great Basin will bring gusty west winds to the mountains and deserts today. Winds from 20 to 30 miles per hour will gust to 40 miles per hour over the High Deserts. These winds, combined with very low afternoon and evening humidities of less than 15 percent will increase the fire hazard. In the affected areas, the relative humidity is forecast to range between 5 and 15 percent.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm weather will create explosive fire growth potential.

High Wind Watch

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for the San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego County mountains, Apple Valley, Lucerne Valley, and the Coachella Valley, as well as the San Diego County deserts. The watch is in effect from this evening (Friday, October 10) through late tonight.

Winds will increase to 25 to 35 miles per hour in most areas this evening. Gusts will be greater than 50 miles per hour at times, with the potential of wind gusts reaching 60 miles per hour, especially on the east slopes of the mountains and adjacent desert locations.

Wind damage to trees and power lines will be possible. Winds this strong can be dangerous to people driving high profile vehicles.

The westerly winds are forecast to diminish early Saturday, once the cold front has passed the area. The winds will then shift to the northeast Saturday night. This sets the stage for a period of moderately strong Santa Ana winds Sunday through Tuesday. Peak winds will be Monday morning. The Santa Ana winds will decrease Tuesday afternoon, but low humidities will prevail through Wednesday.
