Small Vegetation Fire Reported Near Jenks Lake
By News Staff Member
Sunday, July 20, 2008
Update 12:05 p.m.
Firefighters from Station 17 reached the fire scene at approximately 11:45 a.m. They report the fire was approximately a 50-foot by 50-foot spot of ground fire, "caused by a downed tree".
The fire was burning one eighth of a mile from an access road. Once a line has been established around the fire, Helicopter 534 and crew will be released from the Jenks Fire.
Crews from Station 17 expect a three-hour commitment time to contain and mop up the fire.
Air Attack was unable to fly in to the area due to cloud cover, but completed an air reconnaissance flight over the ridge lines checking for locations of possible lightning down strikes. No additional smokes were found.
Original story - 11:24 a.m.
A helicopter from Heaps Peak Helibase and fire personnel from Station 17 responded to a fire east of Heart Bar Campground, in the area of Poopout Hill.

First reported as two separate columns of thin, blue-gray smoke seen from Butler Peak and Keller Peak Lookout Towers, the helicopter was launched to check the area. Upon arrival, only one fire was found. It was reported to be small, a 10-foot by 10-foot area.
Helicopter 534 began dropping water on the "Jenks" fire just after 11 a.m. and is using Jenks Lake as the water source.
