Big Bear Grizzly Threatens RIMOFTHEWORLD.net

By RIMOFTHEWORLD.net
Wednesday, July 4, 2007

The follow email was received Tuesday afternoon from Jerry M. Wright (jwright@bigbeargrizzly.net), publisher of the Big Bear Grizzly:

July 3, 2007
3:45 pm

I am the publisher of the Big Bear Grizzly newspaper. It has come to my attention that your website is linking to bigbeargrizzly.net and using our articles without authorization. I am directing you to stop this practice immediately!

Under no circumstances will we allow you to link to our news and use it on your website.

I will check you website tomorrow and will take further action if you are still using our news.

Jerry M. Wright
Publisher, Big Bear Grizzly

While RIMOFTHEWORLD.net maintains the right to link to any website on the Internet, it has become abundantly clear that the local weekly newspapers continue to act out of fear and ignorance of the First Amendment and current laws. It is a shame that newspapers like the Big Bear Grizzly feel so threatened by new media, that they would attack other mountain businesses, rather than seek ways to work with our business community to ensure that all of the needs of the mountain communities are being met.

In response to this email, RIMOFTHEWORLD.net has suspended linking to any outside media and we are beginning the process of seeking qualified media partners that share our vision for safe, inclusive, and technologically relevant news and information. Any media publishers seeking to be part of this partnership for our mountain communities can contact RIMOFTHEWORLD.net by clicking on the Contact Us link at the bottom of this page.

Below is our response to Mr. Wright:

Dear Mr. Jerry M. Wright,

It is our humblest apology that we upheld our First Amendment rights of Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press by providing links to the news articles on your website in exactly the same way that news aggregator web sites, such as Google and Yahoo! have done, and continue to do. I assume that you will be sending the same email to these companies.

Let me clarify that we did not copy your articles on our site, but only provided links to your website in hopes that the additional online readership would bolster your circulation — as we have done for other media outlets in the region. Since the Old Fire and through our shared struggles and joys as a community, RIMOFTHEWORLD.net has sought to bring people and business together across the mountain communities.

While we would have hoped that the Big Bear Grizzly would understand the collective needs of the mountain community, we are saddened by the tone and uncooperative nature of your email. We have removed any links to your website. I can only hope that some day we could work together.

Warmest regards,
Scott Straley
Editor-In-Chief, RIMOFTHEWORLD.net
