Update 3 — Friday 3:52 a.m.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol in Running Springs has announced the driver of an overturned Jeep has been identified as Brent L. Black, 26, of Riverside.

Black was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Black suffered minor to moderate injuries as a result of the solo vehicle accident on Highway 18 in The Narrows and was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Update 2 — Thursday 3 p.m.

Crestline, CA – The trapped driver of a white Jeep Cherokee had to be removed from his overturned vehicle utilizing the Jaws of Life before being transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

The accident, that closed Highway 18 in The Narrows for over an hour Thursday afternoon, was a solo vehicle crash. Responding California Highway Patrol and Crest Forest Fire personnel had to force their way into the back of the Jeep to remove the driver.

The highway was closed from shortly after 1 p.m. to 2:24 p.m. when both lanes were reopened following the removal of the vehicle.

The identity of the driver was not immediately known because the investigating CHP officer rode with the victim to Loma Linda following the incident.

Crest Forest Fire personnel used the Jaws of Life to pry the back door of the vehicle open as it was overturned in the middle of both lanes of traffic. The driver was unable to be removed through the badly damaged front doors.

Once the rear door was forced open, paramedics from Crest Forest and San Bernardino County Fire were able to slide the driver onto a backboard and he was carried to an awaiting ambulance for transport to Loma Linda.

Initially, the incident commander had requested an airship to land at the 4,000-foot level to transport the patient to Loma Linda, but an extended time of arrival prompted paramedics to transport the driver by ground.

Update — Tuesday, 2:05 p.m.

Crestline, CA — California Highway Patrol and units from Crest Forest Fire District are still on scene of the overturned vehicle on Highway 18 near the Crestline Bridge. They are providing traffic control while awaiting the arrival of a tow truck to remove the white Jeep Cherokee from the highway.

The male victim was extricated and transported to an area hospital at 1:40 p.m. Initially an airship was requested, however, due to the extended time of arrival, an ambulance from CFFD transported him by ground to Loma Linda University Medical Center.

Original story — Tuesday, 1:26 p.m.
