The fire, first received by dispatchers at 8:27 a.m. Saturday, was reported in a remote canyon west of Lake Arrowhead. Ground crews were supported by a helicopter from Heaps Peak heliport.

U.S. Forest Service firefighters were joined by San Bernardino County and Crest Forest Fire personnel in knocking down the blaze before it could spread to adjacent homes and the narrow canyon below the original fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but the preliminary information is that the fire originated in the home.

Approximately 1/10 on a acre of vegetation was burned along with the cabin.

Original Story

Deer Lodge Park - A cabin along a dirt road northwest of Lake Arrowhead erupted in flames Saturday morning. There were some reports of an explosion between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. as firefighters scrambled to reach the fire.

Initial reports from firefighters monitoring the fire from near Edgecliff Drive and Overlook Lane in Lake Arrowhead reported a 40 by 40 foot vegetation fire. However, as Forest Service engines reached the fire, they reported that there had been a structure that was completely destroyed.

The fire grew to about 100 by 100 feet before firefighters were able to put a wet line around it. Helicopter 534 was on scene to watch for spots and help keep the fire out of the heavy canopy of trees.

Firefighters are continuing to mop up the fire and an investigator is en route. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
