Use a semi- automatic, they are faster then a revolver and can hold more in a clip then in a cylinder, unless you have speed loaders! Watch out bad guys-

When shopping for a home defense weapon for my wife the clerk at the gun shop recommended a double action .38 Special with a six inch barrel. I preferred semi-autos, but he said with a revolver there was no slide to be worked and she could be sure that if she did need to use it all she would need to do was point and pull. He also recommended that the chamber under the hammer be empty (or contain a used shell) so that if dropped the weapon would not fire. Lastly, he recommended the first two chambers contain snake shot which, he said, would pretty much guarentee a hit at 10-15 feet, with ball ammo in the other chambers, just in case.

Well, that wasn't what the questions was about.
But, to address your comments:
Auto vs revolver is a personal choice and an unresolvable argument. Revolvers don't jam and six shots should be enough unless you like to shoot like a gangbanger (no offence). That sideways crud with the weapon held high is just dumb. I have used and own many of each. Take a look at this guy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqwsWpfVaOEAs for home defense, I have mentioned many times that I think a short shotgun is the best, with #6 shot. I will not usually penetrate walls, so the neighbors an other folks in the house are safer. Double barrel, pump, or auto is
your choice. A 20ga is a good choice for a lady. There is a distinct visual advantage too.
Even a low power handgun round will go through walls and travel quite a distance.
