Certainly the closest (if you live in Arrowhead/Running Springs/Crestline) is Snow Valley. It's small and usually not crowded especially on snow days or during the week. They also have a terrain park for more advanced snowboarding.
I'm unsure about rental cost there but their website is www.snow-valley.com
We always get our rentals from Above and Beyond in Arrowbear which is about 3 miles west of Snow Valley. I'm sure Snow Summit has a good program as well but it's so much more further to drive that we don't ever go that far.
Good Luck!!

Snow Valley has brought back $10 local Friday nites. It makes the cost of a lift ticket very affordable. REntal equiptment is $30 for board, boots and bindings. This is our first winter on the mountain. My son is 16 and was an avid skateboarder in San Diego. He has picked up Snowboarding quite easily. Most of his friends board so they have given him a little instruction (like how to stop). I work at Snow Valley and it seems to be more family oriented than other places. On the weekend Zach just goes to work with me. I am a little leary of the kids driving in the weather and dont woant them driving the Artic Circle to get to Big Bear. Next year I will by him another season pass at S.V. Also, Above and Beyond has a season lease program for equiptment at a reasonable price. Zach is still growing and I wasnt prepared to sink as much $$$$ into a sport I wasnt sure he'd like. Happy Boarding!!!!

I work at Snow Valley too. The learn to board package is a great deal. Once they learn, then they can take an intermediate class too. Also, there are $19.00 Wednesday lift tickets just in case you don't like to do the friday night thing. It is really wide open on Wednesdays I took a class with my daughter last year, and it is very informative. I had a friend teach me how to board, but I learned SO much in class.....like how to fall without breaking my wrists!
very important..... Happy boarding!

Friday Nights Locals Night at Snow Valley Just $10.00 from 4-10 Pm what a great deal. I learned to snowboard at snow valley and I would suggest to take a beginer lesson it will help a ton. Before I purchased my equipment I like to rent from online ski rentals in Running Springs.

http://www.rentskisonline.com/index.php

They are Wonderful there: Friendly, Helpful, Excellent Equipment, and just good good people. For sure I always take any friends that need to rent their not to mention you can set up your rental online and then its just ready for you to pick up.

Hopefully that helps.

Peace
