Can you repost where to get the book that is about how to cope with insuranc ecompanys. I can't find the link i saw yesterday. Our house burnt down and we really really need it. They are pushing us to do things like the list and settlement check right away.

Thanks, Moyas!!
It might help if the poster list what insurance company they have. We each are probably more competent with our owns companies. Are you talking about the book on Green Valley Lake site?
As far as being pushed to accept checks now - some of that is okay just don't sign anything saying it is the final payment. In fact don't sign anything! We accepted the checks for the face value of our policy about 5 weeks after the Old Fire. There were no strings attached and we still have living expenses plus contents. Because of being underinsured and a lot of work on our part we were able to settle without any lawyers with an amount that made us all happy and there were no strings attached. We could build or not build! Please be sure to keep good records of each contact with the adjustor or anyone else you talk to with the insurance.

Wow, I can relate. We had Allstate and one thing I can say is that they weren't too pushy. But, the sooner you start doing the personal property list, the better. The longer you put it off, the harder it will be to remember what you had. When I did it I had to resubmit it a couple of times to make additions. You should be able to do that too for a specified period of time, even if they cut you a check.

As far as the final settlement, there is so much involved that I can't believe they want to do it right now. Except for Coral and Pat's case, most people take months or sometimes up to two years to finalize the final payout. Of course, that doesn't mean that they can't give you a partial payment now and more later when everything is figured out. Ask them specifically what they meant, and how final it is.

You should at least be receiving some ALE (alternate living expense) money at this point. Even part-timers usually get that for a year. Watch out though---it's taxable if you don't use it for that purpose, especially if it's listed as ALE.
I think some of our neighbors took it in a combined settlement, which would have taken it off of the IRS radar.

When in doubt, slow down and give yourself time to think things through. You'll be glad that you did.
