I drive Live Oak, sometimes there are two cars parked across the street from each other and there is barely enough room to squeeze between them. I drove down this past Sunday and I saw 3 accidents on Live Oak, one was coned off below the accident so when I was driving down Live Oak the CHP and many people were just standing in the middle of the street on a blind curve; thank goodness I drive cautiously on it. I agree Live Oak was not planned well; I see signs that people have put up and I think to myself, how could someone drive that fast as the road banks the opposite one would expect on turns.

We have the same problem lately on Spring Oak, I have seen so many teenagers and others speeding so fast around the curve that I am amazed nobody has been hit yet.

When we lived in OC we had many people that raced on the straight part of our street, some neighbors set up video cameras and taped them. Other neighbors decided to put the fear of God in them by throwing a fully dressed dummy out in front of the speeder, once they hit it, they learned a lesson.

This sounds like a problem that will never be solved to anyones satisfction.

I like the fully dressed dummy idea, but it would probably cause someone to plow into a car or house, so probably not a good idea.

A really bad idea

If the speeding on Live Oak really were a major issue, wouldn't you think the CHP that live on that street would address it? I wonder what their take on this whole thing is.

There is no question that the speeding on Live Oak is a major issue to those of us who live there. It may not matter that much to those that don't live there, but that's not the point. It's kind of a karma do unto others thing. You would not want people speeding on your street so you shouldn't speed on theirs. It's really not too much to ask. You are talking about an extra minute or two from one end to the other. I just don't get why that is such a problem for some people.

If you are in that much of a hurry that you can't respect the safety and peace of mind of others, take the 330 and speed as much as you like. Just remember to slow down when you get to the residential areas.

I'm guessing that was not a response to my post. Which was:

I have a question--have there been any serious accidents on Live Oak, say in the past 5 years? I'm asking because I don't know. Not talking about close calls, fender-bender hit-and-runs, or someone missing a turn and ending up in a driveway. I'm talking about injury accidents.
I think everyone has speeders on their streets--Live Oak may have more because of volume. But I'm betting the CHP could log complaints from most every street in their respective areas over time. So maybe they prioritize and handle complaint calls as they are received, but concentrate more free-time enforcement activity in locations where the actual injuries and deaths occur?

I'm not sure how many accidents (serious or otherwise) there have been on Live Oak during the last five years. We know there was one on Sunday that could have been serious, that's how this thread started. Again the point that I was trying to make is that speeding on residential streets, whether its Live Oak or other streets is annoying to those who live on those roads. I'm not sure that anything can be done to completely eliminate residential street speeding. But if a few people read this and slow down the next time they are driving on Live Oak, that would be a start.

I was hoping to use this forum to appeal to those who are reading this thread to think about not speeding the next time they take Live Oak,not because it's a "major issue", but just to be considerate of others. I don't think that is a difficult concept to grasp. Assuming Live Oak is 2 miles long how much longer will it take to get there if you go 25 mph instead of 40? Are you really in that much of a hurry?

almost 61 seconds
Sent: Tuesday, May 6, 2008 05:32 PM
I figure 1.8 minutes longer, or 108 seconds.

Personally, I like to go 25 mph on residential roads just to piss off the speeders

I work quite a bit on LiveOak, and let me tell you, I park my car and trailer.....off the road.....(of course), place cones at safe space......and still, have had my cones run over everyt now and then, peeps really dont look as they are speeding down that street........something definitely needs to be done, maybe, one of those mph signs, that will remind people, just how fast they are going, or a fake CHP car.........what the heck, hi profile is the best way to counteract some of this.......

just my 2 cents

The CHP has placed those trailers with the radar indicating your speed. I've watched cars racing down Live Oak actually go faster. Most just maintain their speed and very few slow down. Other times I've also seen a CHP officer sit and watch and sometimes cite the speeders. It does no good.

Nothing will be accomplished until the attitude of the speeders change and I don't see that happening any time soon. Until it affects them directly, it's been my experience and the tone of most of the posters here, that they don't care, they don't live here so it's not their problem. Nothing will change until drivers slow down and start respecting their neighbors.

As far as accidents go, I remember a very serious one a couple of years ago, multiple critical injuries. A car going too fast and the driver lost control and hit a car head on and nearly killed two innocent people traveling the other way. But what does it take? Crashing into a tree or a parked car isn't enough of a warning that something is wrong? How many people need to be killed or injured until everyone, the community and officials alike, respond to the problem. Yes, the problem is ours as residents, but once *YOU* get hurt or you kill someone you'll be crying foul the loudest. I guess we residents get to say "I told you so" then. Ha! Some satisfaction. It is really a problem for the whole community and one the whole community needs to resolve.

And how many times to we have to say it's not the traffic, it's not the volume of cars? It's the speed of those cars. Just slow down! Just obey the speed limit. Simple solution. Everyone is happy, everyone is safer.

The problem is not live oak, the problem is drivers.

I live toward the bottom of live oak. I hear screeching tiers all day long.

People fly down this road as if it was a freeway. People use it as a cut off to get to 330 and they speed. That is the problem.

The whole problem with the mountain and accidents is speeding. Unless its snowing and then of course issues arrise. But much of this can be avoided if people would just slow down.

Oh, one more thing....

Last year there was two teens speeding down live oak and lost control. They slammed into my neighbors brand new SUV and flipped it over the edge. I heard this huge noise. So my husband and I ran out side, but the drivers sped off.

They absolutely demolished this guys SUV but amazingly they turned themselves in later. Im sure they were drunk. So while I am happy they turned themselves in, I am confident that they would have been arrested for DUI if they had been caught at the seen.

I live toward the bottom, so I try not to drive up it that often, I go to 330 cuz I like that better.

That is "scene" sorry.

BTW

There was a near fatality, a teen driver slammed into 2 women and one was almost killed. That was about two years ago. I knew I wanted to live on live oak, so I purposed to buy upslope cuz didnt want anyone to drive into my house, LOL. That happend to me when I was a teen. A car full of drunk teens rolled and slammed into our house on Pioneer and took out a whole wall.

I, also, live on Live Oak, and I love it. But, I live near the top. Thankfully, I don't see too much in the way of speeding or accidents where I'm located. But I love my unobstructed view of the whole valley, and the wonderful feeling of privacy with no close neighbors. Not to mention, being on a first plowed road in the winter helps immensely. So, I must speak up and say that not everything on Live Oak is bad or dangerous!!
