I am looking for a dual use unit for offroading in Mexico and locally and have the portability to transfer the unit to my ATV. It seems few units come with Mexico maps/topos but some have them available at additional cost. I want something with at least a 3.5' or bigger screen easily read in sunlight and sturdy enough to handle rough driving conditions and DC power as well as batteries.

OK, nevermind. I bought one and just have to figure out how to use it. I guess there is no interest here.

I don't have one, so I have no opinion.

If you buy me one however, I will field test it for you!

Hello Roncop- we use a magellan on our off road vehicles. We have it mounted with a shock mount and have never had any trouble. We also use mapsend for our detailed maps. If money is not a problem the top of the line is the Garmin 60CSX. I will keep an eye on this and the geocaching pots and will be glad to help anyway I can.

We use 2 different GPS manufactures in the race car. One is a lowrance 6500 color that will give you the best tracklog and you will be able to see all the corners and turns coming up. PIC Radios. The other one is a Garmin 276 handheld color. We use two one for the tracklog the lowrande the other for note and waypoints. The Garmin is a better unit for down load later. It holds 3000 way points and you can route it with up to 1000 waypoints. You can set it to take a reading at a 10th. of a mile and down load later and will tell you your speed, altitude, time. It also has a nice tracklog. Runs on a battery for around 5 hour’s nice collor screen. Search this site http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/search.php?searchid=410222
Here is the GPS down load for Garmin http://www.lbmaps.com/
You can down load the USA TOPO on the Garmin and also there street Maps

I bought a Magellan Explorist XL with bike mount, window mount AC adapter, case, and the Mexico SD chip providing topo and city/street data. Now I need to spend some time learning how to use it. I'll be in Mexico for the 500 helping friends supporting several race teams. This will be my first time driving though. I'm going to try geocaching as well. We found one after the last 500 and it was fun. Thanks for the responses.

Watch out in Ensenada. They have been stealing anything they can on race weekends. Inside of locked gates and fences. I have been racing down there for years and it has gotten bad. Look at this link from the race in March. They will have a lot of info on the 500 also.

We parked in one of those dirt pay lots near the tech inspection area and saw many lurkers checking everything out. Most of the time we were at mile 187 or so near Mike's Sky Ranch and it wasn't an issue. I have no idea where we will be this time, but are supporting 5 cars from different teams, so I will be suitably paranoid and careful. This is my first time driving so the virginity is about to be lost.
