LadyofSF: You work near Palmdale? Do you take the backside (138) down thru Silverwood. Not near as much fog that way. I too commute 45 mins to Apple Valley (not as far as you) .. but would never change where I live. I love it here. It is too beautiful to ever leave. This mountain will be my home for life.

I love it up here. I moved from the inland empire over a year ago and you could not pay me enough to move back.

I grew up here, and, as many a wandering youth has done, spent a few years trying to figure out where the grass was greener. I'm here to report that THIS is the greenest grass on the planet.
It's in the United States of America: that's a privilige that only a small percentage of humans enjoy. We have mountains, lakes, trails, bears, trees, blue sky, frogs, fish, snow, and gold mines in our backyard.
And for those who need more variety, it should be noted that this is the only place in the world where a few hours' drive will take you to the desert, the ocean, the tallest mountain in the lower 48, the lowest point in the lower 48, to Las Vegas, to another country, to Los Angeles, to hundreds of lakes, to untouched wilderness, to farmland, to world class racetracks, to anything... ANYTHING a person could ever want.
I try to avoid being corny and sentimental, but, holy mackerel... I LOVE THIS PLACE!

I remember at Rim High kids driving to the beach in the morning to go surfing and skiing in the afternoon. Of course I always stayed at school and studied.

Tbone66,
Have tried that backside route coming home a few times...Shorter distance, but winds up taking longer...And I have to admit, haven't yet been able to find my way to it coming from this direction, so sad

I go DTH then up 215/15 to 138 and pick it up there...
The fog always seems worse the last couple of miles to Kuffel Canyon...My Husband drops down at Blue Jay, and when it's bad, so do I now...The 2-3 months of crappy commutes is STILL worth it to come home to this

Just wanted to add that I grew up here. My family moved up here when I was six years old back in 1973. I started school at Lake Arrohwead Elementary as a first grader and went till I graduated Rim High in 1985. I also took some off campus college classes at Rim when they offered them. I have worked on and off the mountain. I do have to say that we have a great school system compared to a lot of the school districts I have worked with down the hill (although I have to admit the people I have worked with at the Alta Loma School District in the Rancho Cucamonga area have been really friendly). I have worked as ethier a school custodian or as an instructional assistant. I am currently working part time again with the City of San Bernardino Cable Access Channels as well as Saturdays at KPRO-AM in Riverside. It is nice to get off the hill to do the things you can't do on the hill, but it also makes you appreciate the area more.

AJK, you graduated the same year as my middle child. Her last name ended with a K also.
