Yesterday the parents of an 11 year old girl reported that she was approached by a subject in a vehicle in the area of the 76 Station in RS, who asked her to "come here." The child ran away a reported the incident later to her parents. The subject is described as white male, wearing a navy blue beanie with a bill. The vehicle was described as beat-up pick up with a flat bed, with various tie downs. If you have any information or have heard of similar incidents, please contact Deputy Miguel PLACENCIA at 336-0600 or leave information at the desk.

Do you know the color of the vehicle? Also, about what time did this happen? Thanks!

You should cross post this to the All Communities board, not as many readers here and the kids need to know this.

Additional Information:

Truck is white in color, dirty, unk. make.
Male subject is 20-30 years of age, possibly Hispanic in origin. He was reportedly wearing a blue beanie/watch cap and a dirty white t-shirt.

I want to reiterate that the subject asked the child to come to him in the vehicle. The child was uncomfortable enough that they ran away. The subject did not make any attempt to chase or follow her.

Since this incident occured in the morning is there a reason as to why it was not posted shortly after it happened?

The article states that deputies found out when the girl told her parents yesterday afternoon. The girl probably told her parents as soon as she got home. Anyone else she may have told should have reported it, but was not required to unless they were mandated reporters. So if she didn't mention it to the school but did to the store, it would probably not be reported until the parents found out.

I am the father of the girl referenced in this discussion. First, she is fine, a little shaken and scared. I would like to include additional information about this incident. This situation occurred at the coffee shop on HWY 18 east of the 76 station in Running Springs. She stated that this had happened between 08:15am and 08:30am. A white stake bed type of pickup truck with a 4 door cab approached the gated area within a couple of feet of the fence. The man first asked her "what are you doing here". My daughter told my wife and I that this made her feel very uncomfortable and that she felt that the situation was not right. She then got up to go inside the coffee shop and stated that she told the male that "she was there waiting for the school bus", the male then asked her "hey come over here ". My daughter then continued into the coffee shop and told her brother and his friends. She stated that the driver then started his truck and left the scene heading towards the 18 / 330. The kids that she told discounted the occurrence. When she arrived home from school and told us what had happened I notified both the school and the Sheriff.
My concerns regarding this incident are the following;

1) My daughter stated that she was the only one outside of the coffee shop at the time. The timing and lack of kids in the area at the time of the incident made my daughter a possible crime of opportunity for this scum bag.
2) The kids which she told discounted the event and even mocked her about it.
3) My daughter told friends about the occurrence on the bus and at school who comforted her, but apparently are not counseled enough to know that they need to tell an adult about these situations when they occur and that they need to tell someone right away.
4) Finally I believed we fail to tell our kids to always stay with a buddy. This practice helps with their safety from just living in a forest environment like we do, to their own personal safety that comes in numbers. Please share this information both about the descriptions that has been provided about the suspect, and to review with your child their own personal safety. We thank God he was looking over her this day.

I'm sorry for the ridicule she had to put up with. Please parents, What a great opportunity to stress courtesy to your children.

RSQME: Congratulations to your daughter for trusting her instincts that this was an uncomfortable situation. She rescued herself by not trusting this man and moved to a safer location.

I am really glad that your daughter is OK.

I think it a little strange that you expected her friends to have been counseled to tell an adult, but not that she hadn't been counseled to tell an adult. If we fail to give our kids these tools, we are failing them, but don't blame other kids. If she had told an adult and been ridiculed or dismissed, I would be upset. Other kids are not responsible for our children, we are. SO everyone make sure your kids are ready for any situation that makes them uncomfortable or that is dangerous to them.

....a few minor questions.....did this culprit happen to have long dark hair or was it impossible to tell ?
...also, are we sure the truck was a four door ? Did there happen to be any signs on the drivers door ?

William, reading your post suggest to me that you may have an idea as to the identity of the subject. Please call the Twin Peaks station (336.0600) and talk with an investigator. They will use discretion in following up any leads. If the person you are thinking of is not involved, he can be cleared and the investigation will continue.

TO Devkon, my input to this discussion group was as a public service address to our entire mountain community. I stated that my daughters, as well as the other kids she told are not counseled as a whole to help each other by telling an adult when they hear about situation such as this. My intent was to relay this as a point of awareness to all that might read this site. I find it strange you did not see it that way in the first place. I do not feel that I assigned any blame to any of the children there that day, or the friends of my daughter. The only one I would ever blame for this incident is the subject the confronted my daughter. His and only his action were wrong/illegal. To the others posting information as to any inference of a possible subject who should be investigated please relay this information to the sheriff's office. I am a firefighter down the hill. When I am working I look to all mountain residence to help maintain a safety place for all our kids to go to school, play, and live. Thanks to all for your help and concern as it is appreciated.

I saw your intent. Whom do you expect to teach the children this? That was my concern. We are parents and our children are ultimately our responsibility. I was merely pointing out that all of us, as parents, are the ones who need to be responsible for our children's education, especially about these matters. Likewise, I am surprised you didn't notice that.

I also work down the hill, but I do not use it as an excuse to expect strangers and other people's children to watch over mine while I am gone. My daughter knew at age 8, when she was put in a situation (unfortunately not with a stranger) that she needed to tell an adult about. She was strong enough to do it and went to adults. She knew she had unconditional support from me and that the people at her school were there to help her. WE need to teach our kids this.

I am merely emphasizing this point. The same point as yours, but in a way that puts the emphasis on myself as well as others. If we don't, no one else will be able to get the point across. Schools do lessons on this all of the time, but it means more when it comes consistently from a parent.
