Wildfires swept through southeast Colorado (grassland near Ordway) Tuesday, forcing the evacuation of one entire town and killing three people. By late Tuesday, firefighters had contained 50 percent of the blaze, which damaged at least 20 buildings. A firefighting plane crashed near Fort Carson, killing the pilot, who was battling a blaze that scorched 9,000 acres - about 14 square miles - and forced the evacuation of people living near the base. A third fire, near Carbondale in the western Colorado mountains, damaged at least two homes and injured one person, All three fires broke out after a wetter than normal winter was followed by a dry March.

Thank you for posting this. I read about the fires this morning - Fort Carson was my first duty station {as an Army wife} and my daughter was born in Colorado Springs. Beautiful area - our quarters were at the base of the mountain where NORAD is. Living in Kansas the first 18 years of my life, this was the first time I had seen REAL mountains....

I have a friend who lives in Longmont, CO (north of Boulder) and she was telling me a few weeks ago that Colorado is dealing with the bark beetle on a pretty severe basis. She was saying how their forests are just brown, sort of like where we were before the Old Fire. Could be a scary summer for them.
