The last time we all had to evacuate (2nd time for me), my family had some extra time while we were packing. We decided to put all the food in our refrigerator in trash bags and leave the bags in the fridge. That way, if we lost power again and came back to our home all we had to do to clean up the mess was throw away the bags. Again, this was only because we had EXTRA time and were not rushing out of the house.

Evacuation is all about how much time you have, eh?
Add to the list, if you can... take flammables like propane tanks, gas cans, even cig lighters with you if you have room. With the slide fire, I had all these gas cans and propane tanks in the back of my pickup and thought as I went past station 51.. what kinda person do they think I am running around with all these flammables.
Another thing to consider if you have the time... rake your pine needles, clear your rain gutters and pile by the street and, if possible, cover. We did that and I was still amazed at how many pine needles came down during the fire/winds and how many small spots were charred from embers. I cringe at what the status of my house would have been if we had not cleared on the way out.
I saw after the fact that some had put hand made signs at the street in big letters their address. I am adding that to my list of things to do. Considering painting the address on the pavement on the way out to help with identification.
I think the biggest thing is a plan should your family be separated. The nightmare is your down the hill and your loved ones (including pets) are on the mountain. Have a plan, including where to meet up and regroup. Include neighbors in this plan. You may need them, they may need you.

Sorry, we can not move threads to different rooms. A new thread will have to be started in All Communities. Posts can then be copied and pasted to that thread. And then added to from that point forward.

We noticed that evacuation seemed to be based on how much room we had. With three adults in the house I made 3 lists. First car with MOST important papers/computer/ keepsakes/medications/ basic clothing specifically listed; second car with clothing for longer stays paintings and objects of secondary importance/etc; and then the third car for christmas decorations (important to me) wedding gown (used

) and other things that I'd like to have but are not critical.
Also had a family talk about certain objects that others might consider frivilous but hold great sentimental value...just in case the person that happens to be at home packing isn't aware.
Adult daughter moved away this summer... guess I need to revise my lists.
Oh yeah, one more idea. I have a 2 drawer file cabinet; everyone in my family knows that top drawer items must go and items in the bottom drawer are not as important.
Please keep sharing ideas. This is a very helpful thread.

You know what else I'd take? The clothes in the clothes hamper. To get in there, they probably were things you liked to wear, plus you'll get a good mix of underwear and overwear when you launder them DTH.

The only problem with this that I can see is the potential fireball if you're fleeing for your life and have to punch your truck through a fire area.
If you're going to do this, you probably should take every aerosol can in the house, cooking oil, Crisco, paraffin candles, even your waxed furniture when you get right down to it.
