With all that has been going on over the last week, it could be easy to forget about this important ballot measure Many in our community have faced a terrible loss, let's make sure we don't lose our recreation and parks program. Remember to vote "yes" on Measure C a week from today!

I just recieved a "robo call" encouraging me to vote no on Measure C....I just love this one!

The call was from an out of area tax group, who obviously knows nothing about our mountain or our Recreation and Parks District. They made two points, that are completly false:

1. They claim that this is the largest increase the District has ever asked for since its' inception. First, there has never been an increase since the district was formed in the early 80's. Second, this is actually the second time the district has asked for an increase. The last time was five years ago, and was a $42 increase. There was no backup to justify the increase, and the measure was defeated with about half voting "yes" and half voting "no" (it takes 2/3 to pass).
This time around, each community was asked for input on what would be an acceptable increase, and the consensus was that $15 was reasonable.

2. The "robo caller" said that "even proponents of the measure agree that there is no concrete plan for the increase of $15". Not true...While the exact dollar figures cannot be calculated at this point, the district is faced with increased liability insurance costs, union custodial fees for use of the school facilities, increased maintenance and watering costs for the ballfields, increased costs of childcare, ADA (American w/ Disabilities Act) required improvements for all facilities, aging childcare facilities, aging senior/community centers, etc. Of the $15, approximately $11 will go to deferred maintenance, $2 will go to facilities upgrades, and the remaining $2 will go into a trust fund, earning interest, that will allow the district to develop matching funds that are needed for much needed grants.

These out of area phone calls are spreading misinformation that, if the measure does not pass, will damage our community. We need to make sure the "yes" vote turns out at the polls. Please encourage everyone you know to vote "yes" on measure C. It is one of only two taxes that stay 100% on the mountain, and 100% controlled by local people (the other being the hospital assessment). If this measure fails, our park district could potentially roll back into county control, and we all know how much attention we get from the county!

I just got an email from "Mike<taxpayerprotection at Earthlink[dot]net"

The "signature" at the bottom was:

California Taxpayer Protection Committee #1287571 9971 Base Line Road; Elverta, California 95626-9411

The email told me to vote no on Measure C for the a bunch of bogus reasons.

Questions:

Who are these guys?
How did they get my email?
Has anyone else gotten spam on this issue?

I sent back a very nasty email in response. If someone here is "Mike," -- I'm not sorry. I hate spam, especially spam with which I disagree.

Just heard from the Registrar of Voters that all people who are scheduled to vote at either MPH or Grandview need to place their votes at the Senior/Community Center on Grandview in Twin Peaks. This is due to fire cleanup in the schools.

I voted yes on measure C for our children and parks. Why live up here if we don't have sports, and all that our parks and rec department do for all of us? I felt good about that. When my kids were growing up there was never that much to do but now there are more choices! Go parks and rec dep't.!!!

The Recreation & Parks District is going to need some help. Since the measure only got 57% of the vote (we needed 67% to pass)...I'm afraid many of the ideas the new General Manager had will have to shelved. I am afraid that sports league cost are going to have to increase (the district cannot continue to lose money). I am afraid future grants have now been put in jeopardy, since there is no way to come up with matching funds.

It is truly a sad day for our mountain community.

Good grief. When are we going to get rid of the super-majority requirement for passing these basic measures. I'm so sick and tired of being ruled by the stingy few. 57% in any other context would be considered a landslide and a mandate.

100% agreement there!
