Officials have determined illegal and negligent target shooting as cause for the wildfire burning on the San Bernardino National Forest and state land. Substantial evidence was collected, submitted to the Department of Justice, and used in furthering the investigation. Tips aiding the investigation can be submitted to CDF at (909) 883-1112. The forest prohibits shooting except for designated areas. The Highway 38 road closure and mandatory evacuations for Mountain Home Village and Loch Leven Conference Center remain in effect. Highway 330 will remain open with escorts 24 hours per day until Highway 38 opens. The Emerald Fire is 40\% contained with size remaining at 2,000 acres. The fire continues to burn easterly, toward last year's Thurman Fire, where there is less fuel to consume. Two homes and two outbuildings are confirmed destroyed by fire.
Area residents should remain alert and prepared in the event of sudden changes in local wildfire activity. Residents should listen to local radio and television stations for updates on wildfires and road closure information. Another ScanUSA message will be issued on Thursday morning.

Fire Caused by Shooting (8/30/06 3pm)
The Forest Service says they have determined the cause of the Emerald Fire to be illegal target shooting. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection will take up the investigation. No suspects have been identified yet, but they will be asking for the public's help in locating them. The Emerald Fire began in the Mentone area yesterday around 3:00 pm and proceeded to burn east just north of State Route 38. It destroyed two homes yesterday and sent one firefighter to the hospital. Mandatory evacuations are still in effect for residents of Mountain Home Village and Loch Leven Conference Center.
The fire is approximately 40% contained with full containment expected Friday. Light winds are pushing the fire in a northeasterly direction toward last year's Thurman Fire, where there is less fuel to consume. All recreational sites in the Barton Flats/Seven Oaks area are closed to the public.

"...a San Bernardino County sheriff's motorcycle deputy, was training at the Glen Helen training academy in Devore when he saw the plume. He got a call from his brother who said their mother's home was surrounded by flames.
Collins rushed to his mother's home, the home where he grew up, only to learn it was no more.
"Everything's leveled," Collins said Tuesday, maintaining his composure. "I moved here when I was 12. I grew up here."
He said his brother's Cocker Spaniel and Chihuahua perished in the blaze, as did a sheep his mother owned.
When Collins arrived in Mentone, he said he couldn't access his mother's home because flames were shooting across Fish Hatchery Road. He feared the worst.
His fear subsided when he saw a fire engine emerge from behind a wall of flames, embers stuck to its front grill. Another fire vehicle followed behind hauling his mother and brother...." ~~~~ Note: see the 08/29 03:47 PM log....~~~~

8.00a – ScanUSA.com – “The Emerald Fire is approx. 15% contained. The fire is burning easterly, toward last year's Thurman Fire, where there is less fuel to consume. Aircraft will continue opeations at 8am. Active fire is expected during the day, while weather reports show potential for winds in the afternoon. It will not be uncommon for Big Bear residents to see smoke today from this fire. Highway 38 remains closed, probably throughout the day.
Area residents should remain aleart and prepared in the event of sudden changes in local wildfire activity. Residents should listen to local radio and television stations for updates on wildfires and road closure information. Additional Information can be found at www.inciweb.org “

My Son hss laid out a couple hundred feet of fire hose to help protect the houses on our street. They are headed up to the peak to see where the fire has advanced to since the last check. We had a close call last fire but this one is more of a worrier.

It still has one or two ridge lines to go over before it gets to the South Fork drainage above the Seven Oaks dam. It's quite a distance from R.S. If it keeps going in the current direction, it would probably move towards Snow Valley.

STATE ROUTE 38 CLOSED DUE TO FIRE
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY - State Route 38 is closed from Bryant Street in Yucaipa to
Lake Williams Road due to a wildfire. The duration of this closure is unknown at this
time.
Residents of mountain communities outside of the area affected by this closure will be
able to utilize State Route 18 and State Route 330 as alternatives to access their
property. Currently, State Route 330 is under construction. However, Caltrans is
working with the contractor to keep State Route 330 open with reversible traffic control
(escorts) until further notice. Vehicles five tons and over will not be permitted on State
Route 330. Motorists are advised to be on the alert for the contractor’s work vehicles,
since the contractor will continue to work. Traffic will not be permitted to travel through
the closure area.
New information regarding the road closure will be released when available. Caltrans
